Annual or perennial herb, with a short rhizome; stem noclose, clothed with fibrous remains of leaf sheaths at base, 3 gonous; leaves basal, as long as or longer than the stem, rarely shorter; inflorescence capitate, ovoid-oblong or subcylindrical of a central head and usually with 2 latural suraller heads; bracts 3-4, foliaceous; spixelets numerous, congested, ovate- lanceolate, 1-flowered; glances ovate-oblong, obtuse; stamens 2, anthers obtuse, stigma 2; nuts yellowish brown, oblong or ellipsoid-oblong, lenticular.
