Prostrate or climbing, large, hispid, annual herb with stem grooved, hispid; leaves with 5-6 shallow lobes or subentire, lobes scabrid, rigid, subobtuse, often with whitish blotches on upper surface, tendrils many-fid; petiole as long as the lamina, hairs equal, not pungent; flowers very large, yellow, both male and female flowers clustered in the same axil; male flowers usaully solitary, axillary with very short peduncles; calyx campanulate, teeth-5, linear-lanceolate or foliaceous; corolla yellow, campanulate, 5-lobed, hardly half way down; stamens 3, inserted low in the calyx-tube, filaments swollen at base, glanduliform, anthers linear, connate in a column, 1-anther, 1-cells, anther-2, 2-celled, locules elongate, sigmoid-flexuose, connective not produced, pistillode absent; female flower solitary, axillary, subsessile or shortly pedunculate; calyx and corolla as in male; ovary oblong, style short, stigmas-3, bifid; ovules numerous, placentas-3, parietal; fruit indehiscent, fleshy, very large, baccate; seeds many, ovoid, compressed, margined or not. |
