Annual, prostrate or climbing herbs; stems angular, sulcate, covered with hispiduous, pungent hairs; leaves 5-lobed, lobes obtuse, sinus between the lobes narrow, margin dentate, base cordate, upper surface scabrous, lower with glandular club-shaped many-fid, hairs; ; flowers very large, yellow, both male and female flowers clustered in the same axil; male flowers usaully solitary, axillary with peduncle 4-6 cm long, 5-angular; calyx tube obscurely 5-angled, linear-lanceolate or foliaceous; corolla yellow, campanulate, 5-lobed, lobes erect, acute; stamens 3, filaments swollen at base, glanduliform, anthers linear, 1-anther, other-2, 2-celled, locules elongate, connective not produced, pistillode absent; female flower solitary, axillary, subsessile; calyx and corolla as in male; staminodes 3, short, triangular; ovary oblong, style short, stigmas-3, bifid; ovules numerous, placentas-3, parietal; fruit indehiscent, fleshy, very large, baccate; seeds many, ovoid, compressed, margined or not. |
