Annuals, monoecious, culms 1-2 m tall, erect, glabrous; leaves 25-90 x 5-10 cm, glabrous; sheaths terete; ligules 2-6 mm long, membranous; male inflorescence a terminal panicle; rachis pubescent; spikelets in pairs, up to 12 mm long; anthers 3, yellow, ca 5 mm long; female inflorescence a spadix, enclosed in large bracts; spikelets in several rows along the axis (variable with varieties); lower floret brown; palea present or absent; caryopsis of variable colour (pale yellow, purple, white), subglobose or dorsally flattened, ca 8 mm in diameter. |
