Procumbent or prostrate, scabrid or puberulous herbs or undershrubs, often spinous; internodes elongate; leaves opposite or in whorls of 4 with unequal pairs, subsessile, subentire or dentate, glaucous beneath; spikes terminal or in superposed axillary branches, 4-ranked or capitate, few flowered clusters; flowers tetramerous; bracts in 3 or 4 opposite pairs, margin dentate with stiff hairs; bracteoles 6-8 in opposite pairs, lanceolate or spathulate; sepals-4, in opposite pairs, segments unequal, inner pair smaller, one of outer pair emarginate or 2-lobed; corolla bilabiate, pale yellow with blue spots on lower lip, corolla tube short, ovoid, horny, upper lip subobsolete or obsolete; lower lip 3-lobed, spreading lobes obovate or oblong, deflexed, puberculous; stamens-4; didynamous, adnate at the throat, exserted; filaments rigid, flattened, produced above the insertion of anthers as an excurrent process; anther cells unequal, larger fertile, smaller sterile; margins densely bearded; disk annular; ovary glabrous, 2-locular; ovules 2 in each locule; style linear; stigma shortly 2-fid; capsule ellipsoid or oblong, 2-4 valved; seeds 2-4, compressed, orbicular, echinate, papillose on rigid, curved retinacula. |
