Perennial, medium or small tree with longitudinal cracks in bark; young shoots silky tomentose; leaves shortly petioled, alternate, simple, ovate or oblong, base obliquely cordate or subcordate, apex rounded, densely tomentose beneath when young, membranous, lateral nerves 5-10 pairs, variable in size 5-15 cm long, base usually oblique, coriaceous; flowers few in clusters, greenish-yellow to dark purple, axillary or in sub-terminal scorpoid cymes, usually on short, leafy lateral branches on older stems; pedicels long, slender, tomentose; sepals minute or absent; petals 6, in 2 series, outer minute or small, linear, acute, inner ones coherent only at the base, obtuse, large, base saccate, pubescent; stamens numerous, free, minutely apiculate; carpels 3-many, free, purple; ovaries linear, oblong, tomentose; ovules usually 1-2 in each; styles very short; fruits about 2-6 cm across, 1 to many seeded, developing in umbels, round, green to yellow, succulent. |
