Erect, branched herb or under-shrub, thinly stellate hairy; leaves simple, variable in size and shape, usually oblong-ovate, serrate, base plaited, 3-5 nerved, glabrous above, thinly, stellate hairy beneath; green with purple tinge; stipules subulate, lanceolate, shorter than petiole; flowers in terminal or axillary heads; bracts and bracteoles hispid along margins; sepals-5, connate below, persistent, linear-lanceolate, acuminate at apex; petals-5, obovate, spathulate, white or pink, clawed at base, longer than sepals; stamens 5, opposite the petals, filament connate below into a tube, anther lobes-2, parallel, extrorse; ovary sessile, 5-celled, 2-ovules in each, densely pilose; styles-5, free or connate below; capsules ovoid-globose, loculicidal, 5-valved, exceeding the persistent calyx, each 1-2 seeded; seeds mottled, black and brown. |
