Thorny shrub; leaves unifoliate, elliptic/oblong, obtuse, crenate; petioles narrowly winged; flowers shortly pedicelled, 5-merous, bisexual (rarely staminate), axillary, solitary or in condensed cymes; calyx cupular or urceolate, sepals minute, glabrous, purplish green; petals usually 5, ovate-oblong, obtuse, coriaceous, glabrous, white above, reddish-purple below; stamens 30-40, filaments polyadelphous at base, free above, glabrous or pubescent, anthers oblong, apiculate, greenish yellow; ovary many celled, style stout, stigma oblong or globose, fleshy, ovules 4-8, 2-seriate; fruits ovoid-oblong, yellow, pulp very acidic, abundent, rind thin; septa membranous, cells few seeded; seeds many, pendulous or horizontal.
