Plant Description

Annual, aquatic or marshy, erect, tall herb with spongy, glabrous, terete, sparsely branched, robust stem; leaves alternate, close, sensitive, pinnate; leaflets very numerous (61-101), opposite, linear, obtuse, glabrous, 1-nerved; stipules linear to lanceolate, auricled at base, about 1-1.5 cm, deciduous; racemes simple or branched, 2-4 flowered, 4-8 cm; flowers 2 cm long; peduncles and pedicels clothed with spreading bristles; bracts-bracteoles rounded; calyx deeply 2-lipped, hispid, upper lip rounded, lower 3-lobed, persistent; corolla twice as long as the calyx, large, hispid, yellow or violet; keel petals not beaked; stamens in 2 bundles of 5 each; anthers uniform; ovary stalked, linear, 1-ovuled, style filiform, incurved, stigma terminal; pods 3-8 cm long, linear, upper suture straight, lower distinctly indented, 3-6 jointed, smooth or echinate on the faces over the seeds.
