Moderately large tree, stem armed with short, bipinnate, stipular spines, pointing upward; leaves 2-foliolate, pinnae-1 pair, pinnules 2 per pinna, obliquely obovate, oblong, rigidly sub-coriaceous, glabrous; flowers bisexual, pentamerous, greenish-white in globose heads; peduncles short in compound panicles on elongated branches; calyx long, funnel shaped, pilose; corolla long, dull white, funnel shaped, lobes united below the middle; stamens many, monoadelphous, much exserted, filaments filiform, anthers minute, not gland crested; ovary sessile, many ovuled, style filiform, stigma minute, capitate; pods strap shaped, falcate or circinate, dehiscent, moniliform, coriaceous, 6-8 seeded, spirally twisted, green when young, turn pink or red at maturity; seeds 6-8, black enveloped in pulpy white, fleshy, edible aril. |
