Erect, stout, tall herb; stem and branches covered with short, stiff, simple hairs, not prickly; leaves ovate-cordate, angular or palmately-lobed, lobes 3-5, oblong, margins coarsely toothed, scabrous; petioles more or less prickly, as long as the blade, often tinged with red; stipules subulate; peduncles shorter than petioles, stout; flowers large, 5-8 cm across, axillary solitary; epicalyx segments 8-10, linear, subulate, equaling the calyx; sepals 5-toothed, deciduous, hairy at apex; corolla yellow with dark purple centre; petals-5, obovate, rounded at apex, glabrous, united at the base with staminal tube; stamens numerous, anthers reniform, filaments coherent forming a slender, columnar staminal tube, truncate or 5-toothed at the summit; ovary 5-8 celled, ovules 3 or more in each, style-5 fid at apex, connate below, stigma capitate; capsules pyramidal oblong, acuminate, 15-20 cm long, 5-ribbed smooth or hairy; seeds round, straite, smooth or hairy.
