Decumbent or prostrate, glabrous herb; leaves whorled, spathulate, lanceolate, or elliptic, tapering into a cuneate base, petiole very short; pedicels slender; flowers white in axillary fascicles; sepals 5, oblong, obtuse, margins often membranous, persistent; petals absent; stamens 5 or 10, rarely many; ovary ovoid or subglobose, 3-5 celled, style-5, linear, erect, spreading or recurved, persistent; stigma 3, minute; capsules ellipsoid, a little shorter than sepals; seeds many, covered with raised, tuberculate points, the appendage comprised of yet more minute, subulate bristle.
