Large shrub or small deciduous tree armed with stout spines, often long and strong; leaves opposite or fascicled on branchlets, obovate or oblanceolate, glabrescent or softly pubescent on both surfaces, apex acuminate; stipules ovate, acuminate; flowers solitary or 2-3 together on short, axillary peduncles; calyx campanulate, strigose, lobes short, ovate, sometimes spathulate; corolla salver or funnel shaped, fragrant, white to yellow, throat glabrous or silky hairy, tube as long as calyx, limbs ovate or oblong, twisted, spreading, hairy outside; stamens 5, epipetalous, anther subsessile, narrow; disk annular or cushion shaped; ovary 2 (rarely 3-4) celled; style short, slender, bifid; stigma fusiform; ovules numerous, berry ovoid or subglobose, 2-celled, many seeded, smooth or obscurely ribbed, yellow when ripe; seeds small, compressed, embedded in pulp. |
