Plant Description

Shrub or small tree with woody, resinous branches; leaves opposite or in whorls of three, sub-sessile, broadly elliptic or orbicular, rounded at the apex or shortly, bluntly, acuminate, sometimes as long as broad, bright green above, paler beneath, glabrous or pubescent; lateral nerves about 10-12 pairs; glandular hairy beneath; stipules connate, large, tumid, often split or toothed; flowers large, usually solitary, axillary, subsessile, white changing to yellow, fragrant; calyx tubular or campanulate, unequally 5-9 toothed, subulate-lanceolate, unequal, recurved, pubescent; corolla tube densely pubescent or hirsute, 5-9 toothed, obovate, oblique; stamens as many as corolla lobes, anthers, sessile or subsessile, linear, inserted in the corolla tube; ovary 1-celled, ovules many, 2-seriate on 2-6 parietal placentas; style stout; stigma fusiform, or 2-cleft; fruit globose, smooth, coriaceous, beaked by persistent calyx limbs; seeds many, immersed in purple pulp.
