Annual or perennial, erect, woody, stout herb; stem hispid, sparsely branched; leaves lower petiolate, opposite, upper alternate, broadly ovate, narrowed towards base into a long petiole, acute hispid on both surfaces; head or capitulum solitary, terminal on long, stout peduncle; involucral bracts 3-6 seriate, ovate-lanceolate, acute, strongly ciliate; ray florets yellow, female, 1-seriate, neutral; disk florets bisexual, fertile, numerous, many seriate with tubular corolla, 5-lobed, brown-purple; stamens-5, epipetalous, syngenecious, anther base shortly sagitate, subacute apex; ovary-1 celled, 1-ovuled, solitary, basal, obtuse, style arms with hairy, acute appendage; achenes oblong-obovate, glabrous, compressed, black, smooth; pappus of 2-caducous scales.
