Large shrub or scrubby tree, suberect, up to 3 m high; branchlets scandent, densely hairy; leaves simple, opposite, broadly ovate or elliptic, shortly acuminate at apex, cordate or widest near the base, softly tomentose on both surfaces when young glabrous with age; nerves distinct beneath, petioles 1-2 cm; flowers fragrant, white in trichotomous lax, pubescent cymes,12-20 flowered; pedicels short, bracts linear; calyx lobes 5-6, linear, short, pubescent, lobes 5-6, linear, their narrowest part one third of the way up, short, pubescent; corolla white, salver shaped, lobes usually 9, about 2 cm, spreading, lanceolate, acute, as long as or longer than the tube, tube about 1.5 cm long; stamens-2, included in corolla tube, filaments very short, anthers oblong; ovary 2-celled, ovule 2 in each, style short, stigmas 2, linear; berries simple, often bent, oblong or ellipsoid, 1-1.5 cm long, black on ripening. |
