Plant Description

Erect, much branched shrub; branches usually straggling, terete; leaves simple, alternate, ovate-oblong, lateral nerves 12 pairs, subacute at apex, entire, shining, glabrous above, pale and pubescent on nerves beneath; flowers sweet-scented, born in clusters on long, axillary panicles, each cluster subtended by a leafy bract; calyx tubular, glabrous outside; teeth-5, short, obtuse; corolla tubular, off-white, lobes usually 5, very short, obtuse, reflexed; stamens-5 or as many as corolla lobes, included, filaments adnate to corolla-tube; anthers glabrous, short; ovary globose or ovoid, 2 locular; ovules few; style filliform; stigma capitate; berries, globose or oblong, purplish black, smooth, 1-seeded.
