Plant Description

Large, perennial shrubs; branches lenticellate, armed or spinescent usually straggling; leaves elliptic, cuneate at base, entire or distantly dentate, smooth, glaucous beneath with scattered glands; flowers in panicles; bracts large, petatoid, brightly coloured; calyx campanulate, 4-5 toothed, persistent, often with glands; corolla large, obliquely infundibuliform or slightly bilabiate, yellow, tube inflated above, upper lip shortly bifid, longer than the lower lip; stamens 4, didynamous, filaments glanduliferous, decurved, anthers oblong; ovary 4-locular; ovule 1 in each locule, style-slender, stigma unequally bifid; drupe ovoid, more or less succulent, 2 or 1-seeded, orange yellow, covered by enlarged fruiting calyx; seeds oblong.
