Straggling shrub; branches angular, pubescent when young, terete, lenticellate, glabrous when mature; leaves opposite, ovate-oblong, acuminate, entire or serrate, pubescent on both surfaces; petioles pubescent; flowers in axillary and terminal racemes, lower often longer than upper ones; bracts small, spathulate, entire, acute, ciliate along the margins; calyx broadly saucer-shaped, often reddish-orange,persistent in fruits; corolla tubular, brick-red, inflated above, slightly curved; stamens 4, red, exserted, filaments red, glabrous, anthers 2 celled; ovary obtuse or obscurely depressed, glandular, imperfectly 4-celled, 4-ovuled, style shortly bifid; drupes obovoid, deeply 4 lobed, enveloped in the enlarged calyx, brown-black; seeds minute, oblong.
