Erect, branched, annual herbs; leaves simple, opposite, exstipulate, ovate to oblong, entire or serrate, glabrous above, puberulous along the nerves beneath; flowers in verticillasters, 6-8 flowers together in a whorl; calyx oblong-campanulate, glabrous, tubular, 2-lipped, crimson; corolla bright crimson or red, 2-lipped, glabrous; stamens 2, exserted, filaments jointed at base; ovary superior, 2-4 locular, 4 ovuled, one in each cell, style hairy, gynobasic, stigma bifid; nutlets oblong-ovoid, 3 quetrous, smooth, mottled with back.
