Small to medium sized, much branched, tree; leaves opposite decussate, simple or 3-5-foliolate, fascicled on thick branches, obovate to elliptic-ovate, acute at apex, attenuate or often oblique at base, hartaceous, scabrid, entire, glabrous above, pubescent along midrib beneath; flowers cauliflorous (on old stems), campanulate, variable in color; calyx cleft upto the base, bilabiate, glabrous; corolla with combination of green, purple, red and yellow with dull purple lines, broadly tubular, throat wide, basal tube curved to as long as the calyx, lobes fleshy, deltoid; stamens 4 or 5, didynamous; disk cushion-like or annular; stamens-4, didymous, subexserted; ovary subsessile, 1-celled; placenta parietal, ovules many, grouped in 2-series; style long, glabrous; stigma bilobed; disc annular to pulvinate; berries subsessile, large, woody, globose, gourd like hanging on cord-like, long stalks; seeds thin, wingless.
