Plant Description

Tall, deciduous, glabrous tree, 10-15 m high, bark thick, light-brown, irregularly cracked; leaves long petioled, opposite usually tufted towards the ends of the branches, 50-100 cm long, 2-3 pinnate; leaflets long, ovate-elliptic, base rounded or cordate, entire, acuminate, glabrous; racemes erect, about 20 cm long, peduncles thick, pedicels 1-3 cm long; flowers 5-7 cm long, fleshy, foetid; calyx fleshy, leathery, glabrous, dull violet, campanulate, turning woody in fruit, corolla campanulate, purple to white, glandular inside, lobes subequal, obovate, sparsely crisped or toothed; disc shallowly 5-lobed; stamens 5, shortly exserted, anthers 2-celled, oblong, glabrous, cells parallel, filaments woolly at the base, fifth filament much shorter; disc annular, large, fleshy; ovary linear-oblong, sub sessile, 2-celled, style long, stigma wide; capsules flat, elliptic-oblong, tapering at both ends, with woody valves, many seeded, septum flat, cylindric, about 80-100 cm long; seeds numerous, winged all round except at base.
