Moderate sized tree; bark produces mucilage; leaves 10-15 cm long, very variable in breadth, opposite, rarely alternate, ovate, oblong or lanceolate usually acuminate 3-nerved, nerves not impressed above; flowers small, unisexual, panicles scarcely exceeding the leaves; perianth sepaloid, sparingly silky pubescent; lobes 6, oblong, deciduous in fruit; perfect stamens-9; ovary villous; fruit small, ovate or oblong, dry or slightly fleshy, dark purple in color.
