Perennial, erect, monoecious shrub, 1-3 m high; leaves upto 4-22 x 2-5 cm, ovate-rhomboid, acuminate at apex, shortly cordate or obtuse at base, dentate, sparsely pubescent, pale yellow margins; flowers in dense, spikes slender, 20 cm or more in length, drooping; flowers small, bright red, bracts 5-13, dentate or lobed; disc absent; stamens 8 on a convex receptacle, filaments free, anther cells divaricate; ovary 3-celled, styles filiform, often very long, fibriate or laciniate; capsule of 3 minute, 2-valved, crustaceous cocci; seeds subglobose, minute.
