Plant Description

Large, more or less scandent, evergreen shrub; branches straight or flexuous, usually tomentose; leaves alternate, elliptic-oblong, acute or obtuse, quite entire, undulate margins, rigidly coriaceous, tomentose beneath, strongly 15-20, arched nerves; petiole short, tomentose; stipular leaves ovate-lanceolate, sometimes much larger than flowers; flowers dioecious, greenish yellow or pink, axillary, clustered in long spikes; male calyx tube pubescent, lobes lanceolate, acute, glabrous; disk of male pulvinate, adnater to calyx, that of female urceolate enclosing the ovary; stamens 5, filaments united into a column; anther cells parallel; female tepals subspathulate; ovary 2-3 celled, glabrous, styles 2, forked, ovules 2 in each cell; drupe small with 1-2, 1-seeded cocci or pyrenes in size of pea, globose, green with yellow tinge, glabrous seated on hardly enlarged, persistent calyx; seeds minute, membranous, albumen fleshy.
