Plant Description

Large, scandent shrub, 1.5-2.5 m high, branchlets slender, smooth or tuberculate, striated, puberulous to pubescent; leaves alternate, small, elliptic-oblong, obtuse at apex, rounded or cuneate at base; nerves 6-8 pairs, slender; petioles short, stipules ovate, subulate, entire, shorter than the petioles, ovate, acute, sometimes bristle-pointed; flowers axillary or in racemes, the male in fascicles of 2-6, female solitary; pedicels slender; perianth segments 5-6, reddish pink, rounded or oblong, alternating with disk glands, greenish-yellow; stamens 5, inner-3 connate, outer-2 free, shorter; ovary globose, usually much exserted, 5-8 celled, ovules 2 in each cell, superposed; styles 3, minute, 2 lobed; berries fleshy, depressed, globose, dark purple or black, shining, smooth; seed 8-6, irregularly 3-gonous, crustaceous.
