Plant Description
Small or medium, unarmed tree, growing up to 20-25 metres tall, with a stout trunk up to 2 metres diameter; numerous, aerial, buttressing prop roots present for anchorage in the soil and help to support heavy branches; stipules lanceolate-oblong, connate into narrow red cap; leaves broad, shiny, elliptic-oblong, cuneate at base, caudate, entire, coriaceous, lateral nerves numerous, long and broad, leaf size is largest on young plants and much smaller on old trees; in centre of the new leaf, another immature leaf is waiting to develop; receptacles axillary, ovoid, green-yellow, enclosed in 3-hooded fleshy bracts; male flowers diandric, scattered over interior of receptacle, pedicelled; sepals-4, ovate, anther ovate, sessile; gall flowers sepal-4; ovary smooth, style subterminal, hooked; female flowers mostly sessile; achenes ovoid, tubercled, style long, stigma large, subcapitate. |
