Perennial woody plant, climbing by means of clinging roots from spreading stems; leaves alternate, the lower ones ovate-oblong, cordate at base, unequal sided, acute; upper leaves often much larger, with longer petioles; stipules appressed hairy; receptacles or figs borne only on large-leaved branches; receptacles small, axillary, sessile, globose or subglobose; males flowers few, sessile, near the mouth of receptacles, stamens-1; female flowers sessile, style filiform, stigma oblong; fruits large, pyriform with three large persistent bracts; figs green, turning purple when fully ripe.
