Large, perennial herbs; bulbs erect, globose, neck short, stout; leaves numerous, much broad, oblong, 20-30 cm long, pale green, obtuse or acute at apex, glabrous, coriaceous, scapes produced from the neck of the bulb, as long as the leaves bearing a single globular umbel; flowers numerous, small, scarlet red, fragrant, in 10-20 flowered; perianth superior, petaloid, tube short, narrow, 6-lobed or partite, in 2 series, oblong-lanceolate; stamens 6, slightly exserted, inserted on base of perianth segments, filaments distinct or connate, anthers erect or versatile. ovary 3-celled, cells many-ovuled. fruit indehiscent or a capsule opening loculicidally or bursting irregularly. |
