Perennial, herbaceous shrub; rhizomes or tuberous rootstock, creeping; stems up to 2 m high; leaves large, oblong or ovate-lanceolate, about 20-45 x 10-12 cm, acuminate at apex, tapering at base; flowers in simple, lax, terminal racemes; bracts small, ovate or lanceolate; sepals-3, small, oblong or lanceolate, acuminate; corolla tube cylindric, petals-3, lanceolate, equal; staminal tube cylindric, segments petaloid, unequal, labellum yellow or spotted with red or orange, broadly elliptic, up to 8 cm long; stamen 1-celled, anther adnate to the margin of small lateral lobes of filament; staminodes-3, yellow; ovary 3-celled, many ovuled, style adnate at the base to staminal tube, free above, stigma terminal, capitate; capsules globose or ellipsoid, echinate, indehiscent; seeds large, globose, brown.
