Perennial herbs; rootstocks perennial, tuberous or creeping rhizome; stem erect, simple, leafy, glabrous; leaves large, ovate-elliptic or oblong, acuminate at apex, tapering at sheathing base, entire, glabrous; flowers in simple, lax, terminal, branched racemes; bracts small, ovate to narrowly linear; sepals-3, small, subequal, oblong-lanceolate, red; corolla tube cylindric, much shorter than the segments, lips reflexed, emarginate at the apex; staminodes and perianth lip bright red, yellow or orange, spathulate-oblanceolate, up to 6 cm long, one staminode shorter; stamen 1-celled, adnate to petaloid filament; ovary 3-celled, many ovuled, style flattened, stigma terminal, oblique; capsule, erect, subspherical or globose, obscurely 3-lobed; testa crustaceous, black, shining, warty; seeds granulate, globose, large, brown-black.
