Undershrubs or shrubs, eret, dioecious; stems partially woody; branches modified into foliaceous phylloclades; phylloclades alternate, coriaceous, sessile, persistent; leaves minute, reduced to membranous scales; flowers small, fascicled in the middle of the upper, rarely lower surface of the phylloclade, actinomorphic; tepals 6 in 2 series, free or connate at base, unequal, sometimes with fleshy corona; stamens 3 or 6, filaments connate into a short column or tube, anther sessile; ovary 3-celled; ovules 2 in each locule; fruit indehiscent, berry.
