Large, unarmed, monoecious, tree; stem covered with leaf scars, thickened at the base; leaves pinnatisect, large, forming a crown at apex; leaflets narrow, linear-lanceolate, coriaceous, flaccid; spadix stout, erect at length drooping, androgynous, branches pyramidal, bearing scattered, greenish white female flowers near the base and male flowers above, lower spathes, oblong, hard, splitting lengthwise, upper ones fusiform, clavate; bracts various; perianth coriaceous; male flowers small, asymmetric; sepals small, valvate; petals oblong, acute, valvate; stamens 6, filaments subulate, anthers erect, linear; pistillode minute or absent; female flowers usually much larger, ovoid, 2-bracteate; perianth greatly accrescent, sepals imbricate; petals shorter, convolute with imbricate tips; disk annular; ovary 3-celled, usually 1, basal ovule, style short, terminal, stigmas recurved; drupe green or yellowish green, large, sub-globose, terete or trigonous, 1-seeded, pericarp fibrous, endocarp stony; seed large, sub globose, cohering with the endocarp, albuminous.
